To say that Aubree was excited for her first dance might be the understatement of the year! After Dance Camp, we had a vision that dances could be an opportunity for fun, friendship (especially building boy/girl friendships), and inclusion.
This first dance had a Decades theme. After some thought, Aubree decided she wanted to dress in 50's garb. She invited the girls in our ward to join her in making poodle skirts, encouraged the boys to try the simple 50's boy styles, and planned a pre-dance party.
I relied on Pinterest, luck, and my limited sewing abilities to cobble together a few skirts. Patricia drew and hand-stitched poodles. Aubree and Audrey sewed the poodles to the skirts and added leashes.
Not all the dance attendees chose to dress up, but those that did enjoyed the camaraderie and looked adorable.
The pre-dance party featured milkshakes and sliders.
And what 50's party would be complete without a competitive game of limbo?
I got to help carpool the kids to the dance and snuck in long enough to snap a quick picture. Apparently, last year dances averaged 80-120 kids. This dance had over 250! Aubree and her friends had a fantastic time. Even the boys were enthusiastic in the post-dance assessment.
Dances around here include six different stakes and are held just about every two weeks, so Aubree and her friends will have plenty of opportunities to have more pre-dance parties, dress-up opportunities, and dance excitement.
