Katie and her kids left Christmas afternoon, and Lauren and Dylan left with their girls early the next morning. Our house felt relatively quiet after that! As is our tradition, we spent December 26th putting Christmas away till next year. As much as we love Christmas, packing everything up feels quite satisfying.
The following day I took Aubree to open her very first checking and savings accounts. She's earned a decent amount of money in the past year babysitting, and now she's got a safe place to keep it.
We had a short visit with the Franks. They were only able to stop by for a few hours, but it's always a joy to see them.
Nellie had her last day in nursery. As our baby, this is the end of an era! Her nursery class got to visit singing time for a few weeks before their official promotion, and Nellie loved it. She hasn't had any difficulties adjusting from nursery to primary.
On New Year's Eve we invited the Kerby's and Zippro's over for treats and games. We had a lot of treats! We also had a lot of fun! Per typical, we partied early then got the kids to bed by 9:30pm. That's a late night for them, but still reasonable.
Except for Aubree. She joined her co-op friends for a New Year's Eve party and didn't end up getting home till 1 am!
We had an extra long post-Christmas break because school wasn't scheduled to begin again until January 7. Nellie came up with creative ways to keep herself occupied.
One morning when I was gone with the boys, and Aubree was home alone with Nellie, Aubree needed to practice her violin. Nellie, seeing Aubree practice, asked to have her violin. Her "violin" is made from fort-building sticks and balls. This time though, having her violin wasn't enough. She wanted her own music stand. Aubree, who loves to give Nellie what she wants, made her a violin stand. That still wasn't enough for Nell. She wanted her own music to practice. So Aubree drew some notes on a piece of paper. One of the notes was a whole note, and Nellie insisted it was missing a line. Laughing, Aubree added a line, turning it into a half note.
Right before school was supposed to begin, we had a massive windstorm that left us without power for 2 days. The first day back to school was cancelled for our local district, and we likewise had to cancel our scheduled homeschool co-op.

We made the best of it and felt very grateful for gas stoves, blankets, and hot water heaters. We are also grateful for our good neighbors who again sent an extension cord over their fence to allow us to hook up our fridge to their generator. Graham commented, "We should thank God for our neighbor helping us. Jesus said we should help our neighbors, and they are helping us!"
Amen to that.
