Last week Thane turned six years old! His birthday day was jam packed with activities. First, Mark worked from home, which allowed him to open his presents in the morning. What Winters' kid birthday would be complete without a special Daddy CD?
Thane is currently obsessed with Super Heroes. I used to think he really liked Super Heroes, but that meant he appreciated Superman, Batman, and Spiderman. Recently, however, he's discovered levels of Super Hero intricacies I didn't know existed. He spends hours poring over books of Super Hero character guides and dictionaries and stories. His favorite Super Hero is Green Arrow, so we got him a really neat Green Arrow shirt (which he changed into shortly after opening his presents).
After opening gifts, we jetted out the house on our way to a fieldtrip on the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad. It's a long (1 1/2 hour) drive from our house, and we got a late start. Even worse, my GPS stopped working as we got further from civilization. I'd planned for that possibility by printing out directions, but still ended up missing a crucial turn. By the time I realized we'd gone too far, and turned around, we were nearing the time the train was scheduled to leave the station.
We parked, grabbed our stuff, and ran the long stretch to the loading station, arriving just in time to jump on board. Phew!

Bryce said, "I don't think the long drive and the long run were worth it." I'd have to agree with that sentiment. On the upside, Nellie did take a nap on the drive home, and that pretty much never happens.
I should pause for a moment and mention that Thane hates to get his picture taken. So, if there's a shortage of Thane pictures on his birthday post, now you know why.
After getting home from the train ride, the boys spent a couple hours finishing packing for their father/son campout. They started their packing weeks ago, when they first learned they'd be going. To say they were excited is an enormous understatement.
They left around 4:30 pm, undaunted by the threat of rain. I asked Mark when they got home if he took any pictures, and got a "Nope" response. So we just have to use our imaginations!
I sent cupcakes with them so they could celebrate Thane's birthday with their friends. I later heard reports of lots of food, especially s'mores, late bedtimes, and wild good times. The rain held off until morning, but they were home by 9:30 am - cold, wet, and tired. Every single one of them took a nap that afternoon!
As part of our birthday traditions, Thane got to choose the menu for the
week. He spent weeks ahead of time brain storming the things he wanted
to have on his menu. Since the night of his birthday he was camping, he chose his "special" birthday meal to have on Sunday when the Harp's came down to celebrate with him. He wanted cheeseburgers, french fries, and (most importantly) frog eye salad.
When it came right down to it, he ate so much Frog Eye salad, he was too full to eat his cheeseburger!
Uncle Seth went to an actual comic book store and got Thane his first real comic book. Apparently the selection of kid-appropriate material is pretty slim. That's too bad.
My cake decorating skills reached a new low with Thane's Green Arrow cake, but with all that was going on that weekend, it was good enough! Dallin was super "hepful" in blowing out the candles.
Thane's good friend Collin got him another great present - an enormous book all about the Marvel super heroes!
Thane says he had a good birthday. We love our intense, persistent, generous, funny boy!

These interviews are always so funny to me. I'm not too surprised that he said, "delete that question," to the two questions relating to happiness. He's thinks he's a more serious kid than he is and hates to admit or recognize the cheerful aspects of himself.
He asked me to add the "What's your favorite Super Hero?" question.
"Alice in Wonderland?!" I didn't know he'd even seen the movie, though Aubree assures me he has.
Finally, "sit on top of the car." My first thought was, where did that come from?! Then I remembered that when we went to pick up Aubree's friend yesterday, she and her sister were sitting on the top of their (parked) Suburban waiting for us. It must have made more of an impression on Thane than I realized!
