Odds & Ends

Lauren left. We miss Lauren. Before we took Lauren to the airport we all went out to dinner at a restaurant near the airport. The primary purpose of this event was to break up the 1 1/2 -2 hour round-trip drive for Bryce and Aubree (mostly Bryce). It was also nice to have a final hurrah with Lauren. Aubree LOVES to go to restaurants. She thinks restaurant high chairs are akin to royal thrones. She especially loves to order a milk shake and recently she's decided french fries are pretty great too. Aubree is incredibly well-behaved when we go out, so it's a pleasure to take her, but we're beginning to worry that maybe she's getting a bit spoiled. Both Mark and I remember that when we were young going out to eat was a very rare and special treat. Just pondering...
Aunt Lauren & Bryce
With regards to car trips, Bryce is doing MUCH better in his car seat. Normally I can expect him to be content for at least 15 minutes. Since trips 15 minutes or less comprise 93% of our travels, we're a happy crew. When Bryce is doing well, Aubree frequently comments, "Mom! Bryce is doing awwwwwwwe-some!" When Bryce starts to fuss, Aubree pulls out one of her dolls that has a rattle inside and shakes it which usually calms Bryce down quickly. Aubree is a great big sister. Which reminds me...the other day Aubree asked me, "who was the big sister when I was a baby?"
Brother and Sister
Happy Belated 4th of July! The Fourth is one of my favorite holidays. Mostly because when I was growing up it was a very tradition-rich day. This year we went over to a friend's home and had a great BBQ and let the kids play. We pulled out the big slip-n-slide again, but a thunderstorm rolled in and cut the fun short. We did, however, have lots of great food (including homemade ice-cream - something we always had on the 4th when I was growing up) and fireworks. This was the first year we let Aubree stay up to watch the fireworks (it was the first year we thought she would appreciate them enough to warrant such a late night). She did seem to enjoy the show, but she was pretty exhausted by that point. I think she preferred watching the little fireworks our friends brought, even though she said they were too loud.
Watching the fireworks and trying to avoid being eaten by mosquitoes
Here are a couple more short Aubree stories:
* One day I had my hair pulled back in a bun (because I'm lazy) and Aubree was admiring it. She sighed, "Mom, when I get big can I wear my hair like that?" I told her that if she wanted, she could wear her hair in a bun already. She was totally thrilled and asked to have her hair in a bun every day for a week after that (now it's down to every other day or so).
* This afternoon Aubree disappeared for a little while. I finally found her lying under the covers in my bed. I asked what she was doing and she replied, "I'm sleeping because I'm a little bit fussy." She didn't actually fall asleep, but I certainly appreciated her self-awareness.
* Aubree is obsessed with ice-water. To be more accurate, she wants ice in her water. Once the ice melts, the water is no longer acceptable. Every night she goes to bed with a sippy cup of ice water. If she wakes up during the night, she'll beg to have more ice in her drink. That can be somewhat annoying, but at least she goes right back to sleep as soon as she gets her new ice.
* Aubree has a number of fears. Some are typical, like her fear of bugs, and some are more unique - like her fear of sand. Last time we went to the beach Aubree had a mini-meltdown because she was terrified of getting sand in her sandals. She wanted to be carried to and from the car. Thankfully, once she was barefoot the sand was apparently no longer menacing and she was happy to play. She is also very afraid of dogs. Big dogs, small dogs, red dogs, blue dogs - she screams and runs away from them all.
Okay, now it's Bryce's turn...
*Bryce loves to stare at fans; it seems he finds them quite fascinating. Bryce also loves to suck on his fists. Occasionally he gets a little carried away and gags himself. He tolerates his pacifier, but has become quite adept at either pulling it out of his mouth or projectile spitting it across the room (or the car...).
*My good friend, Juliana, had a baby less than two weeks ago. She came over to visit and we put her adorable little one next to Bryce. In comparison, Bryce looks HUGE! It's amazing how much babies change in the first couple months.

She Loves Me Not.

Aubree is such a good big sister! I understand the fear of getting sand in shoes. I also am petrified of getting my feet sunburned.

Erin,
Thanks for the memories! They’re very amusing. I thought that I would post this here and in the comments on my blog to make sure that you would see it. You are right about there just being too many to consider! But here are a few of the standouts:
*When I got my first letter from you after we found out that we would be roommates at BYU. I felt so lucky and excited to meet you! (I also remember being very proud of ourselves that we were from California  )
*Our freshman year when I ruined your surprise visit home to by telling your mom that you were coming. And then waiting on pins and needles for you to come back to Provo and kill me. (Funny though, I have a lot of memories but I can never quite understand /remember how we managed to not get along at first.)
*I agree about all of the music—some of those songs bring me “back to college” in an instant!! Speaking of which, “I Am a Child of God” always reminds me of you, too. Have your feelings changed on that one?
*You always getting fabulous grades on everything, even when you didn’t start writing a paper until the last minute.
*Your EXTREME PATIENCE with me during my boy-crazy period of silliness. And being able to talk to you about anything! You were always such a true friend. Thank you.
Love ya!
