If it ain't broke...

If it ain't broke...it's probably not ours! Starting a little over a month ago (right around the time Mark went to Texas for a week), everything started breaking. First it was the lawn mower, then the dishwasher, then the valve of our water main, then the dryer (which thankfully was a quick fix), then the car... Ugh!!! Thanks to the help of friends, the car and the water main are fixed, and the lawn mower if half fixed (the initial problem is taken care of, but now there is another - bigger - problem). We finally broke down and had a young man from the ward come mow the yard for us. The picture on the right shows him in our backyard jungle before he mowed. Yeah, it got pretty bad.
Despite battling Murphy and his maddening law, things have been going fairly well. Aubree had lots of friends to play with this last week. I babysat her friend Cheyenne on Tuesday and Wednesday, and on Friday, Megan, Caden, and Ella all came for a few hours. I was pretty tired by the end of the week, but the kids were all great and there were a number of times when it was actually easier to have more kids around. In fact, on Friday I caught myself thinking, "I could have five kids..." Aubree generally enjoyed having playmates. She's been really wanting a "big sister" so I think she especially liked it when Megan played with her.

Thursday morning I took Bryce to the doctor for his 4- month check-up. He's doing great! He now weighs 14 lbs. 13 oz (75th percentile) and is over 26" long (90th percentile). He used to be in the 90th percentile for weight and the 75th for height - he flip-flopped. His doctor suggested he'll be a "big kid...probably 6'2" - 6'4" at least." I don't know that he can really tell this early, but it's fun to think he'll be so tall. Otherwise he's right on track developmentally. He's started grabbing for things (I mean, besides my hair. He's always been good at grabbing that!) and interacting more. He's also drooling a lot. People tell me all the time, "oh, he's cutting teeth!" I just smile and nod. Aubree didn't get her first tooth till she was 10 months old and she was an even bigger drooler than Bryce (we called her "Slobbery Aubree"). I don't expect him to get teeth for a while yet (side note - Aubree just got her 2-year molars...we're apparently a little delayed in our teeth development). Unfortunately, Bryce is not a big fan of primary. The primary president thinks he cries all the time. Hopefully he'll adjust - soon!
Aubree continues to charm us. She says so many random and/or funny things. For example, the other day I told her that her pajamas were too small. She replied, "maybe they won't be too small, maybe they'll be 3 or 4 small." :) Today I was telling her the story of when Jesus died (for the millionth time) and I mentioned "the hill named Calvary." She didn't like that. She said, "why would a hill have a name, that's silly!?!" We talked for a minute about why hills have names. She thought for a moment, then commented, "we don't have hills around here." How true!
Lately Aubree has gotten LOUD. She used to talk and play in a normal, pleasant tone. Now it seems she's always yelling or almost-yelling. She's even taken to ROARing. Yikes. She is getting more and more helpful. One of her "jobs" is to fold and put away Bryce's cloth wipes. She's fantastically good at laying them the "right" direction and stacking them. She really likes being helpful.
In more academic-related news, Aubree's been interested in rhyming. She doesn't quite get the concept, but is getting pretty close. She usually makes up pretend words that rhyme and are very similar to the original (like "eat - deat"). Sometimes she gets confused. I asked, "what rhymes with 'up'?" She answered, "down!" Oops. She's also getting better at one-to-one correspondence. She's been able to count for ages, but I think it was more an exercise in memorization than really understanding what the numbers meant. Lately she's been actually counting things (more than just to 1 or 2 or 3). I've heard boys often figure out numbers earlier than girls. It will be interesting to see if that holds true for Aubree and Bryce.

That is quite the jungle lawn. How long did it take for it to grow that long?

Longer than I should admit (probably about 6 weeks). Yeah, we're "those" neighbors. Thankfully, the front yard did get mowed midway through, so it didn't look nearly as bad.

"If you mow your lawn...and find a car, you might be a Winters." Tee hee. I'm sorry everything was broken. If definitely pours. I am also glad to hear that my kid isn't the only one with a loud voice. Eric is always talking in a loud voice. OH well, that is the worst thing he does, so I can't complain too much.
