Ordinary, Part Aubree

I didn't forget about this post, I've been thinking about it and "working" on it for months. I think I just need to finalize and post it! So, here are some of the day-to-day Aubree things I want to remember (or at least record!):
*Aubree is ALWAYS singing. Sometimes she sings real songs, but more often than not she makes up stories and turns them into song. Lately her singing has gotten increasingly intense. She furrows her eyebrows, cocks her head, and belts out her tunes with deep feeling.
*While Bryce loves to wake up at the crack of dawn, Aubree is more like me - she likes to sleep in. If I ever want her to roll out of bed before 7:30 or 8 am, I literally have to pick her up and set her on the ground. Usually she responds to my wake-up call with an answer like, "Mom, I just want to sleep for hours." I think she might already be a teenager. For the record, she's almost always asleep by 7 or 7:30 pm, so she's not sleep deprived! The only times she gets up "early" is on the weekends when Dad's home. Then she hops happily out of bed as soon as she notices Bryce and Dad are up. Go figure.
*Aubree's a stickler for rules. She chastises me if I don't fully stop at stop signs or if I talk on my cell phone while driving.
* Aubree knows the truth about Santa. A few months before Christmas she asked randomly and seriously, "Mom, is Santa real?" It caught me totally off guard. I don't have a problem with Santa, in fact I appreciate the idea of what he represents. While I was content to go along with the concept of Santa, I couldn't bring myself to "lie" to her, so I answered her question honestly. She seem unfazed, and even acted like that made more sense to her. My biggest concern with her "knowing" was that she would tell her friends and ruin their belief, so I cautioned her against telling them. "But Mom," she argued, "they're WRONG!" She is still very concerned about what's "real" and frequently stops me when we're reading books or she's hearing a story to inquire as to whether it's "real or not."
*Aubree has some interesting quirks. For example, she likes to be sick and she likes to get shots. During a recent illness she wasn't eating her lunch, so I said, "you have to eat or you won't get better." Her response? "I don't want to get better, I like being sick." Why? She says it's because she likes getting medicine. And just to be clear, she got exactly one teaspoon of Tylenol over the course of her illness -TOTAL. She handles being sick so well - she didn't get that from me! A few months back we took Bryce to the doctor to get his follow-up flu shot. When Aubree found out Bryce was getting a shot, she cried huge crocodile tears - not from sympathy, but because she wanted a shot too.
*In the last few months Aubree had her first dentist and eye doctor visits. She was a little nervous about going to the eye doctor, but ultimately handled both exams in her usual calm, "it's-no-big-deal" manner. The eye doctor said her vision was, "perfect." Hurray!!
*Though I can honestly say that the vast majority of the time Aubree is happy and helpful and wonderful, she certainly has her moments. Since turning four I've noticed that she's been a lot more emotional. Little things (like being asked to pick up her dress-up clothes) will occasionally result in her lying in a crying heap on her floor. A couple months ago we had about a three week period where she developed some serious attitude. Previously unheard phrases came flying out of her mouth in anger, such as, "I'm never playing with you, EVER again" (and she was talking to me, not Bryce), or "You're so MEAN," or (my personal favorite), "You're BOSSING me" (why yes, yes I am!). These were often accompanied by a slamming door or a full-fledged tantrum. Very, very un-Aubree-like. She's generally so even-keel and rational. Thankfully the serious sass and attitude was (in retrospect) short-lived, but it still sometimes sneaks into her daily behavior.
*During that same "attitude" time, she was really testing her limits and being uncharacteristically naughty. She was experimenting with lying and drawing on EVERYTHING: the walls (with fingernail polish!), chairs, tables, herself, her dolls, the blinds, her brother, the underside of the sink...it was maddening! At one point after discovering she'd drawn on her doll's face I threatened something extremely rational along the lines of, "If you don't stop I'll take away ALL your things and make you stay in your room with nothing!" She looked right back and said, "then I'll just draw all over the walls in my room." I'm pretty sure I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. Again, I'm happy to report there have been no inappropriate drawing incidences since those few terrible weeks.
*Aubree LOVES babies - she always, always has. I can remember her being only 10 months old and spending an entire 6 hour plane flight staring at a baby a few rows away. I believe she would be very sad as an only or youngest child. So, to say she's excited about the prospect of a new baby in our family would be the understatement of the year! She's stopped saying "hello" or "goodnight" to me, instead she always addresses the baby in my belly. A trillion times a day she asks how or what the baby is doing and I sometimes wonder if she is also attached to my stomach. If I ever sit down, she's immediately in my lap, lying across my middle to feel the baby kick and roll and "give her a high five."
*Every single day, Aubree tells me, "Mom, that baby sure is growing." Yes, dear. I know.
*Before we decided on a name for our new addition, Aubree frequently came up with suggestions. Some of her offerings included: "Keedan" (her running favorite), "Rintinco", "Meenter," etc. Good thing she didn't actually get to choose.
* The other night, while saying her night-time prayer, she prayed, "and please bless the baby that he will grow and be healthy and be smart [pause], like us." She has an abundance of self-confidence.
*Aubree still spends a great amount of time role-playing. For a while, she liked to pretend to be Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. When we played Cinderella it always cracked me up because she'd assign me to be Cinderella right until it was time for the Ball, then she'd take over the role. Why? Because "the glass slippers wouldn't fit my feet." Of course. I think it might also have something to do with not wanting to have to do lots of chores. Another popular, though somewhat disturbing, game is "Run-Away." In this game, Aubree and her siblings (and we're all assigned to be siblings) have to run away to "Uncle Eric's house," because our parents are either really mean or dead. Fun stuff.
*Aubree is very curious, observant, eager, and creative. Her drawings lately blow me away. She must have inherited her Grandma Graff's artistic ability because sometimes she honestly draws better than I do (not that, that's saying a whole lot...). One day we got a package in the mail and before I could throw out the box, Aubree asked if she could turn it into a robot. She pulled out her supplies and created the masterpiece you see to the left.

Must. Stop. Blinking!

We didn't get a crib for Aubree until she was five months old. I remember putting her in the crib for the first time and thinking, "this bed is way too big for such a little baby." It was even worse the first time I put Bryce in his crib because he was still a newborn and the bed dwarfed him.
The pattern repeated itself when it was time to move Aubree out of the crib and into a toddler bed. Without the rails of the crib, her new bed seemed so big and open and I again thought she seemed too small.
Fast forward a couple years... Aubree stretches the length of her toddler bed and with a new baby on the way, we decide it's time for the next upgrade.
Doesn't she look tiny in that big bed? (Unfortunately, her room also looks much smaller now.) The first night she had a hard time falling asleep, despite being quite tired from a busy day. She commented, "Mom, I just can't sleep in this bed...I'm just too excited!"
Since Aubree has a new bed, Bryce inherits the toddler bed. I moved the toddler bed to his room thinking that maybe we'd start the process of transitioning him out of his crib. I'm really in no hurry, because the new baby will sleep in a bassinet in our room for his first few months, plus I really didn't think Bryce was ready for a "big kid" bed. Bryce, however, always manages to defy my predictions.
The first night, he crawled into the toddler bed. Going with his preference, I tucked him in and said good night. After he came running out of the room three or four times, I decided that was enough humoring him and into his crib he went. The poor boy cried and cried for at least a half hour, "my bed.... my beeeeeeeeedddddddd!" He finally managed to go to sleep, but woke up in the middle of the night and sobbed a couple of times, "my bed!" Night #2 (last night), he again crawled into the toddler bed. I know it took him a while to fall asleep, but he didn't get out of his bed once! When he woke up this morning, he STILL didn't get out of bed - he just called, "Mom!" like he did when he was in his crib. He took his nap in the new bed today too - no problems. I think I underestimate him too often. I'm so proud of my big boy!
In another big step, we finally switched Bryce to a forward-facing carseat. It's fun that now he can see what we see, but I also put the two kids side by side to make room for the baby, and that is not as fun. They spend about a quarter of their time in the car torturing each other. Hopefully as the novelty of being next to each other wears off, so will the kicking, grabbing, and stealing. (I can hope, right?)

No Hurry

My sisters have been asking me to post updated pregnant pictures. Lauren went so far as to request pictures of my "cute little pregnant belly." I informed her that my belly is neither cute nor little (for those types of pictures I referred her to Colleen), but she was not deterred. So, here are a couple of more recent photos. Aubree took both of these pictures and they were the only ones in the sets that weren't blurry and/or didn't have my head cut-off.
28 weeks
30 weeks
I remember being pregnant with Aubree and feeling so anxious for her to arrive. I just couldn't wait to have her in my arms. Though I am equally thrilled to be having another baby, I no longer feel a desire to speed my pregnancy along. In fact, having just ten weeks left makes me want to try and slow time down.
Right now life feels so simple. Bryce and Aubree get along really well and have reached the point where they are fairly independent. I can say, "go get in the car" and they run along to their car seats. I can hand them spoons or forks and they eat their meals. I put them in their beds and they fall asleep on their own. They tell me when they're hungry or stinky (in Bryce's case) or don't feel well. We've become comfortable in our routines and I generally know what to expect from them.
In less than ten weeks, everything will shift. I have high hopes that both kids will react well to their new little brother, but I remember all to well how much work an infant requires and I'm prepared for our comfortable world to be shaken up for a while.
When our baby arrives, I'll embrace the opportunity and blessing. There's not much I enjoy more than cuddling a new baby and smelling their sweet baby smells. I'm eager to meet my son and see if he looks like Aubree or Bryce or has his own unique look*. No longer being pregnant will also be a bonus. In the meantime, I'm trying to enjoy the current ease of just having two easy-going kiddos.

*When Aubree was little people would often ask in a confused manner, "who does she look like?" We never had a good answer. When Bryce came along, no one asked, they just stated, "he looks just like his dad!" Aubree and Bryce didn't look similar as babies and they don't look similar now. However, lately I've noticed an interesting trend. People frequently make the comment, "wow, Bryce looks so much like his Dad and Aubree looks like you." Truth be told, I don't think Aubree looks like me much at all, but she doesn't look like Bryce, and Bryce looks like Mark, so I think people assume that she must then look like me. So, out of curiosity, I pulled out a picture of Mark and I when we were both around four years old for comparison.
Bryce has Mark's eyes and cheeks (with the cute dimples!) and hair, but their mouths are very different. If anything, I think Aubree looks like my mom. So, does anyone happen to have a picture of my mom when she was a little girl so I can compare (Kim?)??

Love and War

Lately Aubree's been obsessed with writing: lists, messages, songs, and especially notes. Since we just celebrated Valentine's Day, love is apparently on her mind. Most of her notes are to friends or family members. On the right is a cute note she wrote to our elderly neighbor, Mary Jo.
Today she was given a little Hello Kitty notepad and spent all afternoon writing notes. The most common phrase out of her mouth was, "Mom, how do you spell...?" After she went to bed, I found the pages of her book scattered across the computer desk. As I gathered them together, I came across this note:
In case you need translation, it says, "Randy. I love you Randy. Do you love me?" Uhh...
Now, Randy is a very nice boy, but it just so happens that he's 17 years old. Aubree has a "thing" for older, Hispanic boys. Her previous favorite guy (another handsome Latino) recently left on his mission.
Right now I'm just laughing, but maybe I should be worrying...

On a completely unrelated topic, there's been a quiet war raging in our home for the past month or so. You see, Mark has some (admitted) OCD tendencies. Mostly they're just little things - like books have to be aligned correctly on the bookshelves, drawers have to be pushed in, the spines of the DVDs have to all be facing the "right" way, etc. He never gets upset if these things aren't done, he just can't rest until he "fixes" them.
It seems Bryce, however, has his own opinion of how things "should" be. Every few days, Bryce wanders over to the DVD tower and turns the DVDs around so the black edges are showing. I rarely notice the change, but Mark does - every single time - and switches them back around. And so the battle rages on...

Valentine Parties!

Aubree and her friends are always looking for a good excuse to have a party. Apparently, Valentine's Day is a perfect excuse because we had two full-blown parties we got to attend. The first was our "preschool party." Preschool parties are special because (in addition to all the celebrating) all the siblings (and all the mommas) get to attend and participate. In our little preschool group, that makes for lots of kids, chaos, and fun.

Enjoying a heart-themed lunch
decorating sugar cookies
Our second party was with friends we've met at the library story-time. The hostess planned an amazing party complete with numerous crafts, lots of goodies, stories, lunch, and goody-bags. It was very impressive! There were lots and lots of little girls...and Bryce. Maybe the next place we move there will be lots of little boys with whom Bryce can play.

You'd think we asked the kids to make silly faces in this photo...

King Noah's the Boss

Yesterday as I was reading my scriptures Aubree came up and asked me to read out loud. "Sure," I replied, "I'm reading about Abinadi."
"Oh!" she exclaimed, " I know who that is...He's the one who got fired!"
Can't really argue with that.

Change is on the Horizon

With the changes Pres. Obama has proposed regarding NASA and the future of space travel, there will be significant repercussions at the Kennedy Space Center. The one that most directs us is that the company for which Mark works, United Space Alliance, will no longer be a company once the shuttles finish their scheduled flights. All the employees have recently been informed that when the shuttle manifest is complete (supposedly in Sept. or Oct. of this year), everyone will be laid off. There will also be a (mostly voluntary) lay off in May.
So, it looks like by the end of the year Mark will need to find a new job and we probably won't be living in Florida any longer. This isn't necessarily a completely bad thing for us. We never planned on staying in Florida long term and had even suggested 2010 as a good time to transition. Now the decision has been made for us!
Right now we're thinking that we'll probably wait until the "end" of the company in Sept./Oct., rather than taking the May layoff because that's when our baby is due. However, if a truly fabulous, can't-turn-down job offer came along, we'd make it work.
So, if anyone knows of a good job or has a job lead or any job-related suggestions for a Materials Scientist/Chemical Engineer, please let us know! Also, if anyone would like to buy a house (for significantly more than it's worth), let us know as well. ;)
Thanks!
