We didn't get a crib for Aubree until she was five months old. I remember putting her in the crib for the first time and thinking, "this bed is way too big for such a little baby." It was even worse the first time I put Bryce in his crib because he was still a newborn and the bed dwarfed him.
The pattern repeated itself when it was time to move Aubree out of the crib and into a toddler bed. Without the rails of the crib, her new bed seemed so big and open and I again thought she seemed too small.
Fast forward a couple years... Aubree stretches the length of her toddler bed and with a new baby on the way, we decide it's time for the next upgrade.
Doesn't she look tiny in that big bed? (Unfortunately, her room also looks much smaller now.) The first night she had a hard time falling asleep, despite being quite tired from a busy day. She commented, "Mom, I just can't sleep in this bed...I'm just too excited!"
Since Aubree has a new bed, Bryce inherits the toddler bed. I moved the toddler bed to his room thinking that maybe we'd start the process of transitioning him out of his crib. I'm really in no hurry, because the new baby will sleep in a bassinet in our room for his first few months, plus I really didn't think Bryce was ready for a "big kid" bed. Bryce, however, always manages to defy my predictions.
The first night, he crawled into the toddler bed. Going with his preference, I tucked him in and said good night. After he came running out of the room three or four times, I decided that was enough humoring him and into his crib he went. The poor boy cried and cried for at least a half hour, "my bed.... my beeeeeeeeedddddddd!" He finally managed to go to sleep, but woke up in the middle of the night and sobbed a couple of times, "my bed!" Night #2 (last night), he again crawled into the toddler bed. I know it took him a while to fall asleep, but he didn't get out of his bed once! When he woke up this morning, he STILL didn't get out of bed - he just called, "Mom!" like he did when he was in his crib. He took his nap in the new bed today too - no problems. I think I underestimate him too often. I'm so proud of my big boy!
In another big step, we finally switched Bryce to a forward-facing carseat. It's fun that now he can see what we see, but I also put the two kids side by side to make room for the baby, and that is not as fun. They spend about a quarter of their time in the car torturing each other. Hopefully as the novelty of being next to each other wears off, so will the kicking, grabbing, and stealing. (I can hope, right?)

Wow-- I could almost have written this post!
Laura did really well in her big girl bed at first, but when the novelty wore off, she kept getting up and coming out during naps and bedtime. I really didn't want to go back to the crib, though, so I ended up buying a baby gate for her doorway. It has been fabulous! Her doorway is right across the hall from ours, so we can hear her when she gets up or calls out. I feel safer knowing that she can't go walking around the house at night now. (Just thought I'd let you know how well this worked for us in case Bryce starts getting adventurous!)
POking, grabing, and any other way to entice an outburst will continue........................for many years.
It's just crazy how fast they grow up. That's awesome that Bryce did so well with the transition to the 'big boy' bed. And I remember Bethany's first night in a twin size bed too; she was SO excited. LOL! Now if I could convince Dave for us to switch to a king size bed and I would be SO excited! :)
