Last Saturday was full of fun activities. We started off with Bryce's soccer game. He's come a loooooooonnnngggg way from the beginning of the season. He really loves playing and has turned out to be a pretty good little baller. Kind of makes me sad the season is now over (but not that sad...now Thursday evenings and Saturdays are free again!).
Following the soccer game, we drove up the road a little bit to visit a train show. Last year Mark and Bryce went alone (and Bryce won train tickets in a raffle); this time around they were eager to show off what they'd seen. I thought it was interesting to see what the kids found fascinating. That they loved the Legos was no big surprise.
There was a corner set aside with a small train the kids could "drive" themselves by pushing a red button. Thane was mesmerized. Who would have thought that just pushing down on a button could so thoroughly captivate him? And how can I use this newfound knowledge to my benefit?
My favorite part was watching the kids in the free play area. Their different personalities and ages shown brightly. Bryce quickly lost interest in the toy tracks in favor of watching a real steam train simulation. Graham was happy just to be put down to play and practice his walking, but made it clear that the wooden helicopter was the best toy around.
Thane systematically collected all the Thomas trains and lined them up.
Aubree found wooden people and retreated to a corner where she proceeded to create an imaginary world for her characters. Trains? Not necessary.
In the evening Aubree and I put on our best witch outfits and headed off to Aubree's first official Activity Days activity, which just happened to be a mother/daughter activity. Once we arrived, we broke into teams, hopped into vans, and took off on an exciting witch/scavenger hunt. The girls had to take pictures of some things (such as a black cat, a jack-o-lantern, a non-orange pumpkin...), collect some things (like a candy corn, a pumpkin seed...), and complete a few tasks (like get a stranger to wear a part of their costume, or dance behind someone and record it). I was skeptical at first, but it turned out to be a really fun activity. The girls were beside themselves with giggles.
After the witch hunt, all the teams met back together for a spook-tacular dinner and a chance to see everyone's pictures and videos. I think the idea was a winner. Oh, and no doubt, Aubree is thrilled to finally be in Activity Days.
