Chore Challenge year two proved to be a slightly different beast than year one. All the kids were beyond excited to begin, but for our oldest (cough*Aubree*cough), the motivation was short-lived. In the early part of the summer, she kept saying, "I'll do it later." Unfortunately, "later" arrived a bit sooner than she'd hoped.
Part of me wanted to nag and cajole and force, and sometimes I did. Mostly, though, I realized that failure can be a great teacher. So, Aubree watched her brothers consistently climb levels and ultimately earn their grand prizes. As the challenge wound to a close, she scrambled and was able to make it to level 6 to get her small prize. She did not earn her grand prize, and as a result the family didn't earn a party. Bummer. It will be interesting to see how this year's experience translates to how she approaches next summer's chore challenge.

As I mentioned, Bryce and Thane were super enthusiastic about the whole process. Earning their level three ice-cream was a huge deal to Thane. He'd never had a Dairy Queen Blizzard before, and after trying one, he talked of little else in the ensuing weeks.
Being super pregnant and having a baby in the middle of this Challenge did make it a little trickier, but it was incredibly helpful to have extra, capable help from the kids the last half of the summer. The extra burden on me at the beginning of the summer paid off with big dividends!
Both Thane and Bryce completed the Articles of Faith memorization tasks on their lists. Thane had to be moving constantly as he practiced his verses.
Like last year, Thane was the first to finish the Chore Challenge, and he reveled in this accomplishment. For his Grand Prize, he chose to get a Dairy Queen Blizzard and go on a ($25) shopping spree with Mark to Fred Meyer.
Bryce learned tie his shoes just in the nick of time, and earned his desired grand prize - a new Lego kit.
I've already started making my lists for next year!
