I think I might have mentioned at some point last fall that I was coaching the volleyball team for the young women in our ward. "Coaching" is probably too generous of a term, however, since I mostly just showed up at the games and established the player rotations. We ended up not having enough young women from my ward to field a team, so we combined with two other wards, which made even the remote possibility of having practices even less feasible.
When volleyball season ended, I mentioned to Mark, "they know not to ask me to be the basketball coach, right? 'Cuz I don't know anything about basketball!"
Turns out none of the other women in the ward (admit to) know anything either, so guess who ended up as the Young Women's basketball coach? Don't laugh too hard (never mind... go ahead and laugh).
This time around, I had a whole slew of young women eager to play. Of the twelve or so girls who fairly consistently came to games and practices, only four had any basketball experience. In some respects, I think that worked in my favor, since we were all learning together. YouTube became my friend.
I can't say the results were pleasant ... we lost all our games....which is especially embarrassing since our ward's young men's and men's teams both won the Stake Championships. However, we did have a lot of fun, and I loved working with the young women so much that I'm already plotting how we can keep having basketball practices at least monthly from now on (and this time I'll recruit people who actually know something about basketball to help with the coaching)!
Oh, and I informed all my basketball players that they've all been recruited to be on the volleyball team too. Lucky them!
