All in One

Thane is now a month old! I had a dream the other night that it was Thanksgiving and I couldn't figure out where the year had gone. At this rate, I'm afraid my dream might come true!
There have been a number of small stories I've been meaning to record, but just haven't had the chance. Rather than write a bunch of small, individual posts, I'll just put them all in one big compilation entry.
Perceptions: When I got home from the hospital, I was shocked to discover that Bryce had tripled in size in just the couple days I was gone. After holding Thane, it seemed Bryce had also gained 20 pounds. Not only did Bryce seem so much bigger, but literally overnight I discovered that my expectations of him shifted dramatically. When I'd change his diaper I found myself thinking, "he is WAY too big to still be in diapers." After he got out of the shower, I'd reason, "I don't need to be in a hurry to put on his diaper, surely he's too big to pee on the floor." Logically, I know that he just turned two and it is still normal for him to be in diapers, etc., it was just strange how just having Thane around made me see Bryce as such a big kid where just prior he'd been my baby.
Wedding Bells: A couple months before Thane was born, we were having dinner when Aubree announced she was going to marry her brother. We gently explained that she couldn't marry family members. To our surprise, Aubree burst into tears. "Aubree," I soothed, "I PROMISE that when the time comes for you to get married, you won't even want to marry Bryce." "I don't want to marry Bryce," she wailed, "I want to marry Thaaaaaaaaaaane!"
Cheerleaders: About a week after Thane came home, I was changing his diaper with Aubree and Bryce looking on as an audience. Soon Aubree started chanting, "Yea, Thane!" Bryce, ever the parrot, quickly joined in and soon they were both cheering, "Yea, Thane!" Aubree explained they were cheering because "Thane was so calm while you were changing him. He didn't even cry!" They still like to cheer for him whenever they happen to be in the room when he's being changed. Oh! How I hope they can continue to cheer each other on, even for small accomplishments like not crying through a diaper change!
Cry if I Want To: Not only does Thane look quite a bit like his big sister, he's also decided to take after her newborn crying habits. Every evening for the last couple weeks Thane has a period of an hour or two where he cries inconsolably. Blech. There were a couple days when the colickyness (let's just pretend that's a word) lasted most of the day and all night, and that was really not fun. Once that stopped, the hour or so in the evening felt downright tolerable! At least this time around it doesn't leave me in a puddle of tears like it did when I was a first-time Mom. I know he'll grow out of it eventually. (Hopefully sooner rather than later.)
Career Change?: A few weeks ago Aubree commented, "Mom, you should get a job as a trash truck driver." Though grateful for her career advice, I practically asked, "but Aubree, if I went to work, who would stay home and take care of you and your brothers?" The conversation continued as follows:
Aubree: "I could take care of us."
Mom: "Okay, what would you make for lunch?"
Aubree: "Peanut butter and honey sandwiches!"
Mom: "You could probably do that... but what would you do about dinner?"
Aubree: "Ummm, you could just leave me some recipes."
I was only able to convince her that I should stay home when we got to what she would do to take care of Thane.
Fun with Baby: For a while, when Bryce would hold Thane, Bryce would get nervous and say, "he not eat me!" "No, Bryce," I laughed, "Thane only 'eats' me."
As I've mentioned previously, Aubree loves to hold Thane. The only thing she doesn't like is when he spits-up. For the first few weeks, every time Thane would spit, Aubree would run away shrieking. Since Thane is a spit-up King, there was a lot of shrieking. Thankfully, Aubree's dramatic reactions have largely subsided. However, yesterday at church (during sacrament meeting) Thane was fussy and in an attempt to calm him, I lay him on his belly across my lap. Aubree turned around and put her face next to his head and her hand under his chin and started to coo to him. At that precise moment, Thane spit-up, totally filling Aubree's hand. The timing looked like it had been choreographed! Of course, Aubree pulled her hand back in alarm, which caused the pool of spit-up to go flying across her dress and onto her other hand. Considering her horror of spit-up, Aubree did a fairly good job of not flipping out. I did my best to keep her calm, clean her up, get Thane's face out of his own spit, and control my laughter.
Morning Entertainment: Aubree's decided that cereal boxes provide fascinating reading. Every morning both she and Bryce ask for a box to read. Aubree, ever literal, is an advertiser's dream. "Mom!" she'll exclaim, "did you know Rice Krispies are a perfect bedtime snack?"
Googler: Mark taught Aubree how to "Google" and now it's one of her favorite activities. She types a word into the search box, then clicks on "images." Once she's found an image she likes, she drags it to the desktop and puts it in her "pictures for Aubree " folder. She's amassed quite a collection of pictures (more than 100 total!) from "alligator" to "yo-yo." She even made a folder for Bryce so she can search for pictures for him too. I require that I be in the room and she run potential search items by me first; I'm afraid she might type in something innocent like "Bambi" and come across something inappropriate.
Going Deaf: Bryce has a new favorite word -- "What?" He especially likes to use this word when we ask him to do something he doesn't want to do or when he's doing something wrong. "Bryce, stay away from the computer." - "What?" "Bryce, put your books away." - "What?" It can easily become an endless cycle and Bryce thinks he's so clever.
Little Fish: Aubree just finished two weeks of swim lessons. I wasn't going to do swim lessons this year because I didn't want to have to chase after Bryce in the heat every day with Thane. My friend proposed a fabulous plan - she picked up Aubree every day for swim class (because her daughter was in the same class) and left her youngest here with me. It was a total win-win situation. She didn't have to chase around a bored almost two-year old, and Bryce and Raelyn had a blast playing together every morning. I know I got the better end of the deal. Aubree LOVED swimming and did extremely well.

You are doing wonderfully! What a great job you did of remembering to post all of those cute little stories.

I feel like I know your kids just from reading your blog, which is such a good thing. I hope that we can see you all someday!

BTW, thanks for your sweet comment on my blog. It's nice to know that I have a friend who is learning to juggle three kids, too!

I laughed out loud at the church spit up story. Aren't kids the best? They always make us giggle! Glad to hear you're getting the balance down (or do we ever really do that?)

I knew you'd be a great mom. Isn't it fun to be around your children as they grow and change? I remember reading cereal boxes when I was young, Twinkles was my favorite. It had a comic strip on the back. Mom would cut along the dotted line and it made a small book in the back of the box. But I must admit, I could not read at four like Aubree.

Hey Blue,
Have you ever heard of the 5 S's? Swaddling, Shushing, Swinging, Side, and Sucking? If not you need to go watch "The Happiest Baby on the Block". I think you might find it very helpful with Thane's nightly cry sessions! :0) Love you all!

I can't get over how adorable all of your kids are! I know the adjustment from one to two children was tough, so I can only imagine what adding a third would be like. I'm sure you are a pro.
