Wise No More

In one week I have to get my wisdom teeth removed. Booooooo. I've put it off for a very long time but I can't avoid it any longer. In addition to the fact that I absolutely HATE going to the dentist (okay, technically this is an oral surgeon and I got in trouble at his office for referring to him as a "dentist," but I hate it just the same), getting my wisdom teeth out will be additionally complicated because I am still nursing Bryce.
When I went in for a consultation visit and discussed this with the oral surgeon he indicated that I wouldn't be able to nurse for 3-5 days. When I balked at that amount of time he explained that for sure I couldn't nurse for at least 24 hours because of the IV sedation (there's no way I could make it through getting my wisdom teeth pulled awake and thankfully at this office sedation is standard practice). Then he explained that I'd have to wait 24 additional hours after taking any major painkillers. I asked if any of his patients didn't take the major painkillers after surgery and he gave me such an incredulous/confused look that I wondered if I'd somehow misspoke. After a moments hesitation he stammered, "most patients want the painkillers." Yikes.
What to do? What to do? Bryce has never taken a bottle, so I figured I'd better start getting him used to the idea. Here is a picture of the first (and only) time he has had a bottle. He drank about an ounce before deciding he didn't want to be bothered. I planned on being more consistent with this process; I even called the lactation consultant at the hospital to inquire about renting a pump for a month. The lactation consultant, however, scoffed at the idea that I couldn't nurse for such a long time. She insisted, "my c-section mom's nurse right away." I tracked down the specific drugs that will be in my IV (4 of them!) and so far it seems that I should only have to miss one feeding (we're still making sure on the last drug). That won't be too bad, right? Much, much better than 3-5 days!

PS I'm still not planning on taking the "major" painkillers. I've never taken them before and have managed pretty well. Please tell me I'm not totally crazy and will be all right. Oh, please no horror stories, I'm just barely keeping my anxiety at bay as it is.

I have not had my wisdom teeth removed, and I have not nursed a baby. However, I would like to say that I greatly admire your dedication to nursing. I definitely believe it is better for the baby. Good luck.

I'm with you on the dentist thing. I hate them. I put off going until I absolutely have to. Probably if they put me out every time I had to visit one, I might not have such an aversion to them. But who can afford to be put to sleep each dentist visit? Not me.

I can't believe that your mom went to Mexico to have dental work done. Brave woman!!!

In regards to wisdom teeth, I have found that if you are put out when your wisdom teeth are removed you have less pain & problems afterwards.

It is when you are awake for the process (as I was)and hear & feel all the banging, pulling & racket involved in removing impacted wisdom teeth that causes all the trauma & the long recoup time.

Just have your husband give you a blessing that you won't have much pain afterwards so that you don't have to take the major pain pills. Problem solved.

I had my wisdom teeth pulled a couple of years and had no problems. I think I took the pain killers for that day. And as a c-section mommy I nursed Killian right away and they said there was no problem with the meds and nursing. And I didn't even take those pain meds very much.
My sister works at an oral surgens office and she always tells patients 48 hours because of the sedative. If you have any questions let me know and I can pick her brain!
If Sean can do it, you can do it!

You can tell Erin that when I had my teach extracted never took any pain meds after the surgery, and I was also completely sedated. (Well I only woke up once during the surgery). I went home took a nap went on a date, then to work the next day at 5am. No pain meds, and normal food after 24hrs-Stew

Good luck, Erin. I was awake getting mine taken out; it wasn't too bad. If you do have to give Bryce a bottle, just have Mark give it to him (if you can) so that Bryce won't smell the breast milk on you. Hope it goes well for you.

I know UT has a Pregnancy Risk line that also has information on lactation for medications. It might be worth seeing if FL has one as well to find out the effects of meds on breast milk and babies. I could also look into them for you if you want to let me know what they are.

I have given Alyssa a bottle twice and I gave her breast milk, but it had to be quite warm for her to take it. Maybe Bryce would take the bottle if it was your milk and warm? I am not sure what milk you gave him before, but it is just an idea.

Good luck, and I am sure it will all work out fine. Even if he doesn't take a bottle and waits to nurse for longer than normal it won't have any lasting harmful effects on him. He might be mad and hungry, but he is also eating solids so he won't starve.

Let me know if I can do anything for you.

Thanks so much for all the comments, advise and well-wishes! Kim, I'll definitely have to get a blessing before-hand - great idea.
Now I just hope I can be as tough as Stew and Sean.

Uggh I hate the Dentist too, I got anxious just reading your post. I don't remember recovering from having my wisdom teeth out being too bad. Good Luck!

Only thing I highly recommend is frozen peas. They are great for reducing the swelling on your face and if you really want pain killers I like naproxen or Aleve. Great stuff and you don't feel all weird.

For a treat, on our way home after having my wisdom teeth removed, my mom bought me a chocolate shake. BAD idea. The cold ice cream was on the mark, but using the straw created a vacuum in my mouth that dislodged the blood clots that were forming in the wounds! Owwwww. I did like being put under for the procedure, it was a delightful nap. You will do fine. I am proud of you for doing so much research so you and Bryce can be as normal as possible. Love you!! You'll be fine.

Good Luck, I totally went under and was glad I did. Afterwards, the Vicadin made me so sick that I stopped taking it. The pain was bad, but tylenol helped me through it.
