Homes United Fall Highlights

As we sit here with in-person school/co-op cancelled for the rest of the school year, it's good to reflect back on some of the highlights from HuCo last semester. We have a great group of kids this year. They are very competitive and loud, but also capable, adventurous, and wonderful.
For science, they learned about geology the first semester (we used Focus On Middle School Geology). Usually they had a lecture-based class one day, then an experiment class the second day. They did some fun experiments! During one experiment, they modeled plate tectonics with graham crackers and jello.
Once a month they took geology hikes/field trips to see geological features in person.
One of their favorite hikes was up Poo Poo Point.
Bryce said it felt like he could fly.
They had remarkably good weather for the majority of their outings.
What a great way to bring geology to life!
My Literature class focused on literary analysis this year. It's the second time I've taught this course, which mostly made it easier to plan and prepare.
We played around with seating options in our Tuesday/Thursday classes. For a while the kids had the option to sit on the ground. It ended up not being the best, but was a fun experiment.
We had a really great field trip rock climbing.
Our little group had two hours to climb as much as they wanted. Even Graham and Thane got to participate.
Right before Thanksgiving we planned an outing to a nearby ice skating rink. We invited some non-HuCo friends as well.
We also brought some HuCo alumni. Reunion!
We took another field trip to the Apple Store.
This was a blast! They taught the kids some basic coding, then gave them each their own iPad and Sphero and had them code their way through an obstacle course.
Thane jumped in and proved he can code with the rest of the older kids!
One of their PE units involved some mountain biking. Wow! What a cool skill.
