My baby just turned THREE! We have never had a three year old and not also had another baby. This is uncharted territory for our family!
On the day of Nellie's birthday, we met up with Katie in the morning to see a Not-Its concert. We staked out a nice place in the shade (because it was a 90 degree day!), but most of the kids didn't spend much time sitting stationary.
Some of them hopped up and rocked out with Katie. Some of them wandered to the back of the grass area where another boy had set up soccer nets and joined in an impromptu soccer game.
Aubree (of course) brought a book to keep her occupied.
After the concert we came back home and Nellie spent the afternoon playing with her cousins. I didn't make her take a nap, which was probably a mistake. She asked to have macaroni and cheese and hotdogs for dinner. Truly a gourmet meal!
She was most excited about her cake. She asked Katie to make her a butterfly cake. More specifically, she asked for a "pink, purple, and green butterfly cake." Katie nailed it!
Nellie screamed with excitement every time she looked at it and could barely keep her fingers out of it.
Her excitement reached a fever pitch when she opened her presents. She squealed and screamed and exclaimed over every new gift, even a pack of new underwear! It's not easy to think of gifts for a fifth child. It seems like we have every thing she could possibly want. She wasn't much help either. When we asked what she wanted for her birthday, she always answered, "a dinosaur!" Graham fulfilled that request.
Thane bought her a new coloring book and she was so thrilled to have more "homework." Bryce gave her his etch-a-sketch (aka the iPad of the 80's).
She also got a new butterfly swim suit, which she wanted to try on over her pajamas.
I think she had a good day.
Nellie is a determined, bright, and independent girl. She always wants to keep up with her older siblings and will fight to be involved.
The older kids have assigned days to be sous chef, but Nellie has designated herself the sous chef every night.
Every night she runs into my room around 1am, gives me a big grin, and crawls up next to me. I admit, I love hearing her pitter-patter coming down the hall and I love having her cuddled up next to me.
The other day Bryce sneezed next to Nellie and she tattled, "Mom! Bryce bless you'ed all over me!"
She's always in the thick of things with her brothers and thinks it's her job to tackle them if they ever lay down on the ground. She gets really riled if she thinks they are bothering her (which of course is extra incentive for them to bug her).
She still loves nursery and any situation that involves friends. She also loves babies and taking care of anyone her size or smaller.
I recently discovered that she sings, "Jesus wants me for a sun-BEEP." I blame the nursery leaders. Ha!
