Uncountable memories
We returned on Saturday from our big adventure. It's going to take me a while to post details of our trip, especially since life here at home didn't stop while I was gone (rude!), and now I'm feeling a bit buried by all the tasks waiting for me. But this is me starting, and usually starting is the hardest part.
The idea of driving to Arizona sprouted almost two years ago when our friends moved to Gilbert. "We'll come visit you in February 2017," I told them. Schools here have a week off in February for "mid-winter break" (aka "it's been a long, gray winter and we know everyone needs to go find some sun"). We just took an extra week in addition for our trip (one of the best perks of homeschooling).
About three weeks before we left, I was lying in bed thinking through some of the details, when all of a sudden I remembered something. "Nellie!" My eyes flew open. What had I gotten myself into?! How could I have forgotten that she's terrible about sleeping outside of her crib? I resolved to expect her to get no sleep for two weeks.
In the end, I have to admit she did 10 times better than I expected. It was still super hard to travel with a baby/toddler, but she did manage to sleep occasionally in the car, and did semi-okay sleeping at night in her pack-in-play and in my arms (which she usually hates). Having rock bottom expectations helped.

The other kids were rock stars. Certainly we had our moments of arguing and fussing and whining, but for the most part, they handled long drives, constant change, unfamiliar people and situations, and interrupted schedules phenomenally well.
I hope to blog all about our trip soon, before I forget the details. Stay tuned.
